VA-ACME SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

All Virginia Advisory Council on Military Education (VA-ACME) scholarship applications and attachments must be post-marked by 17 January 2011. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Awardees will be notified in February 2011 by phone and by e-mail. All payments will be made directly to the student. Members of the VA-ACME Board and their families are not eligible for any of these awards. There are four different scholarship categories. Scholarship applicants must either reside or work in Virginia.

  1. Active Duty, Drilling Reservist, or National Guard Member - $1,000

    Definition: This scholarship is open only to U. S. Armed Forces members (active duty, drilling reservist, or National Guard) who have completed Basic Military Training or Officer Candidate School. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status.

    Criteria for Selection:

    1. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at this link.
    2. Assigned to a military installation in Virginia.
    3. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program.
    4. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    5. Must complete requisite essay, not to exceed two pages and double-spaced.

    Submit Application Package to Include the Following:

    1. VA-ACME scholarship application form.
    2. Official transcript(s).
    3. ONE letter of recommendation (commanding officer, supervisor or instructor) from a person unrelated to you, who can attest to your motivation, character, and integrity.
    4. Evidence of enrollment (such as the institution's letter of acceptance).
    5. Essay.

    Essay Topic: How will your education goals enhance your military career?

  2. Family member (to include spouse or child) of Active Duty Member, Drilling Reservist, or National Guard - $1,000

    Definition: Scholarship is open to spouse/dependent child of active duty, drilling reservist, or National Guard member. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status.

    Criteria for Selection:

    1. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at this link.
    2. Currently pursuing a certificate, associates, bachelors, or graduate degree program.
    3. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    4. Must complete requisite essay, not to exceed two pages and double-spaced.

    Submit Package to Include the Following:

    1. VA-ACME scholarship application form.
    2. Official transcript(s).
    3. ONE letter of recommendation (supervisor, or instructor) from a person unrelated to you who can attest to your motivation, character, and integrity.
    4. Evidence of enrollment (such as the institution's letter of acceptance).
    5. Essay.

    Essay Topic: Describe how you balance military family life, community service, and your academic pursuits.

  3. Permanently disabled military member or family member (spouse or child) or family member of service member missing/killed in action - $1,000

    Definition: This scholarship is open only to U. S. Armed Forces members (active duty, drilling reservist, or National Guard), who have completed Basic Military Training or Officer Candidate School and who are permanently disabled, family member of permanently disabled military member, or family member of service member missing/killed in action. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status and additional documentation.

    Criteria for Selection:

    1. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at this link.
    2. Resident of or working in Virginia.
    3. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program.
    4. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

  4. Veteran or retiree of the Armed Forces residing or working in Virginia - $1,000

    Definition: This scholarship is open only to veterans or retirees of the U. S. Armed Forces to include reservists and the National Guard who have been honorably discharged. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status.

    Criteria for Selection:

    1. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at this link.
    2. Resident of or working in Virginia.
    3. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program.
    4. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
